The Belgian Nuclear Research Centre (SCK•CEN) is an institute of public utility. More than 600 employees realize a turnover of 80 M€. It gives priority to research on nuclear reactor safety, radiation protection, radioactive waste management and site restoration and non-proliferation.

SCK-CEN is operating different facilities:
BR2-MTR with very high neutron flux and neutron spectrum tailoring for the irradiation of fissile materials and strongly neutron absorbing experiments;
BR1-reactor for activation analysis, calibration, neutrography, and reference reactor experiments;
VENUS zero power critical facility for simulation of core fuel, reactor code validation;
HADES-URL for the studies of clay as potential host for long lived highly active nuclear waste;
NUCLEAR/CHEMICAL LABORATORIES for the research on highly radioactive materials;
MYRRHA for the study of a new accelerator driven neutron source.
SCK-CEN is coordinating the Belgian and has initiated the European Nuclear Engineering Network, International School for Radiological Protection.
