The Forschungszentrum Dresden-Rossendorf e.V. (FZd) was founded in 1992. It is an institute of the “Wissenschaftsgemeinschaft G.L. Leibnitz”, i.e. it is funded by the Free State of Saxony and the German Federation with 50 % each.
Its research program is focussed on the research areas Structure of Matter, Life Science and Safety and Environment. The Institute of Safety Research (one of five scientific institutes) is concerned with the assessment and improvement of safety of technical infrastructures in general and of nuclear reactors especially.
Main activities are focussed on thermal hydraulics and neutron kinetics of nuclear reactors, radiation field measurements and calculations, structural dynamics modelling and diagnostics of processes as well as the characterization and analysis of the mechanical behaviour of materials and components.
The Institute for Safety Research has been involved in several EU-, TACIS- and PHARE projects, partly as the lead contractor or coordinator. Within the EUROTRANS project FZR is contributing to the domains DM1 (DESIGN) and DM4 (DEMETRA).
There is a long-term experience in the design and operation of liquid metal facilities. Special competence has been developed regarding the measuring capabilities in order to study local and global properties of liquid metal flows. The MHD department of FZR was already a participant in the foregoing EU projects TECLA and ASCHLIM.
